Isotta woke up in the curve of Massimo’s arms, contentedly resting against the long lines of his body. Casting her eyes on him, Isotta breathed deeply, slowly releasing the air in her lungs. She had no real expectation for how she would feel afterward. Isotta never imagined an afterward, not with Massimo. There was a smile, though. It eased across her lips as she thought about what had just happened. But this? This feeling was different. This was bigger than anything she’d felt for Massimo. What did that mean for them, though?

Massimo stirred next to her, rustling and then readjusting, pulling Isotta in closer. When he snorted a little, Isotta covered her mouth with her hand, trying to hold in the giggle bursting to come out. Either Massimo felt her body moving or heard the laughter that spilled past her hand, but he stirred again.

“Are you laughing at me?”

His voice was deep, throaty, and scruffy scraggly.

“Yes,” Isotta giggled louder. “You snorted.”

“Never,” Massimo huffed.

“But you did, though.” Isotta couldn’t contain her laughter any further and did nothing to try to.

“Oh, so that’s how you are going to do me?” Massimo crooned. “Come here.”

Isotta still wore a smile as Massimo lifted her to him. They were face-to-face.

“And you are still laughing in my face,” Massimo smiled.

“I don’t mean to,” Isotta smiled and then stretched her face, trying to take the smile away. Massimo let her go through the motions, smiling as a result of the funny faces she made.

“Done now?”

Yes, promise. I’m done.”

Isotta quieted after a few moments.

“Mission accomplished?” Massimo asked, balancing his large hands on the cradle of Isotta’s back.

“What mission is that?”

“The mission of you relaxing. That was the goal of this trip, right?” Massimo commented. “So, has the mission been accomplished?”

“Certainly,” Isotta replied.

“Good to know,” Massimo nodded. His hand lifted, cradling the gentle line of Isotta’s face and then to the coils of her hair.

“Are we going to be okay?” Isotta asked as she rested her head on Massimo’s sculpted chest. Massimo continued to stroke Isotta’s locs. He understood the depth of the question she raised. He’d tormented himself with it, too.

“What happened between us, Isotta is something I will never regret,” Massimo began. “And what we had before this week, I can’t imagine living without. You are my wife. So, if it’s up to me, then yes, we’re more than okay,” Massimo continued. “Are we okay?”

Lifting her head from his chest, Isotta found Massimo’s eyes and connected there. She searched the depth of the brown of his eyes and attended to the hints of gold.

“I was afraid,” Isotta began.

“Afraid?”

“Yeah,” Isotta answered. “I was afraid to let you make love to me again for fear that it would be more like punishment,” Isotta sighed.

“I regret that so much,” Massimo replied, sincere in his desire to be reassuring. He didn’t want that either. Isotta meant the world to him.

“Any regrets?” Massimo asked, concerned with what the answer might be.

She noticed the slight rise in Massimo’s thick brow and the flex in his jaw.
